Losing weight by drinking water: Is that possible?
Planning to shed a few pounds? When it comes to losing weight, it's important to drink enough water. But does drinking water actually help you lose more weight? We'll answer that question in this article.
Weight loss in a nutshell
Losing weight is theoretically quite easy: you need to consume fewer calories than you burn. First, calculate your calorie needs. Then, adopt healthier eating habits and increase physical activity to create a negative calorie balance. Instead of calories, your body will eventually start burning fat to get the energy it needs. That's how you lose weight!
Losing weight with water
To lose weight, it's crucial to consume fewer calories. Water contains zero calories, making it the best choice. Ditch the soda and opt for a refreshing glass of water. This way, you'll definitely consume fewer calories each day. However, just drinking water without eating anything is not healthy. Your body still needs nutrients.
Why does drinking water help with weight loss?
- Water has zero calories: It's wise to stick to water when trying to lose weight, as it contains no calories. Additionally, you can also drink green tea and coffee (without sugar and milk), as they are also low in calories.
- Water curbs hunger: When feeling hungry, we often think we need to eat, but it's often just thirst. Try drinking a large glass of water when you feel hungry.
- Improves athletic performance: If you're incorporating more exercise into your routine along with healthier eating, staying hydrated is crucial. During exercise, you lose fluids through sweat, and drinking enough water helps maintain your fluid balance, allowing you to sustain physical activity longer and lose more weight.
- Reduces stress and fatigue: Inadequate water intake can lead to fatigue and increased production of the stress hormone cortisol (1). Given that weight loss can be challenging and stressful, staying properly hydrated is essential.
Does drinking warm water help with weight loss?
There's no research showing that the temperature of water affects your weight loss performance. However, during weight loss, you might feel colder more quickly. As you consume fewer calories, your body has less energy to keep itself warm. A cup of warm water or green tea can be a good solution. Or, of course, a thick sweater.
Have you tried this before?
Drinking water doesn't make you lose more weight. However, it can help you stick to your weight loss plan, and water contains fewer calories than sodas.
