Stay healthier for longer with these habits
Many people believe that only genes determine your life expectancy, but environmental factors and choices such as your eating pattern and lifestyle are also key. For example, obesity can shorten your life by 5 to 13 years. Here are 9 habits linked to a longer life.
Avoid overeating
The link between calorie intake and longevity is becoming increasingly clear. More and more studies on human populations show a connection between excessive calorie intake and a decrease in years of life. (1) (2)
Become zen
Science says meditation rejuvenates. It activates telomerase enzymes, essentially reversing the clock on your immune system. (3)
Get off the couch
Moving can gift you extra years. Here's how: shaking your legs loose triggers the production of new neurons in the hippocampus, resetting your brain. Just 15 minutes a day can make a difference. (4)
Focus on a healthy plant-based diet
Many studies show a connection between a plant-rich diet and a lower risk of premature death, cancer, and heart failure. (5) (6).
Take Omega-3
You don't have to get Omega-3 from fish oil anymore. Fish extract it from algae, so you can directly take algae oil. At a dosage of 250 mg EPA and DHA per day (for an extended period), the risk of death from a heart attack decreases. (7)
Try turmeric
Turmeric, also known as curcumin, is the king of herbs when it comes to anti-aging. This yellow substance contains the potent bioactive compound curcumin. Curcumin reduces inflammation, releases antioxidants, and supports the condition of your heart, brain, and lungs. Good to know: these studies have not been conducted on humans yet. (8)(9)
Hang out in the sauna
Find a gym with a sauna because sweating for about fifteen minutes, four times a week, reduces the risk of age-related ailments by 66%. Not insignificant. Side note: this study was only done on men. (10)
Go to bed earlier
Sorry, young parents, but poor sleep is really detrimental. Every night you fall short is one too many. Try to catch up on sleep whenever you can and close your eyes on time :) (11)
Quit smoking
Here it is again... smoking. Not good for anything. We all have an uncle who smoked heavily and still lived a long life, but that doesn't change the fact that it affects you. Smoking is one of the main causes of lung cancer. About 85% of all cases are due to smoking. So, put that cigarette down.
