Does it make sense to track your sleep?

2022-02-04|Lifestyle

Many people love sleep tracking. The fancy apps and sensors are getting more accurate, we know. Very nice, but don't get too hung up on the numbers. The data about sleep stages and other scores related to your sleep quality can be off at times, so there's no reason to stress about them. Don't let them determine how you start your day.

Pitfalls

Contact sensors, like smartwatches or bands, aren't as precise as professional equipment. If you blindly trust the numbers from your sleep tracker, you might end up with a wrong self-diagnosis. It could indicate a bad night even if you wake up feeling well-rested. Bet you'll suddenly feel tired, right? Therefore, make sure you can interpret the data accurately before you change your daily routine or consult a doctor.

Use it as support

Don't fixate on the data from your sleep tracker. Use it as support to become more aware of your sleep. Look at general patterns such as total sleep time, how long it takes for you to fall asleep, sleep efficiency, and the start and end of your sleep (2). See if you can discover a link between your sleep and certain behaviors (exercise, diet, stress, etc.). Then, think about how you can better align them.

It’s all about you

Another tip: don't compare yourself too much to others, but mainly focus on your own measurements. If a sleep tracker indicates that you've had a rough night and are recovering worse than usual, consider it as a helpful new insight that you can work with. It's a bit of awareness. Are you indeed not sleeping or recovering well? What lifestyle adjustments can you make to improve that?

Is sleep tracking useful or not?

Sure, but take the measurements with a grain of salt. Especially if you know you have a lot of interruptions in your sleep. Use them primarily as support to become more aware of your own sleep, so you can learn more about your sleep (pattern).
