Is an air fryer really healthier than a deep fryer?
In more and more households, the deep fryer is being replaced by an air fryer. The reason is that the air fryer is much healthier. But is it really? We'll explain how it works.
What is an air fryer?
From a distance, an air fryer looks quite similar to a deep fryer. They are both square appliances with a basket inside for snacks and fries. The big difference is that an air fryer heats the products by means of hot air, whereas a deep fryer uses frying fat or oil.
Differences between air fryer and deep fryer
In practical terms, you only prepare fries and snacks in a deep fryer. But with an air fryer, you can prepare many more products. For example, you can also heat vegetables, bake buns, and even make cakes.
Another big difference is that the air fryer doesn't stink as much as the deep fryer. You actually only smell the products you're heating, whereas with a deep fryer, you also get the smell of burning fat. For that reason, many people put the deep fryer in the shed or on the balcony. You just put the air fryer on the countertop, possibly with the hood on.
An air fryer is also safer. You don't have to deal with grease splatters that jump out of the pan, and even if the device tips over, there's probably not much to worry about.
Finally, an air fryer is much easier to use. You plug it in and the device is ready. With a deep fryer, don't forget to regularly replace the fat. After use, the air fryer is quickly cleaned.
Is an air fryer healthier?
Yes! An air fryer is fundamentally much healthier than a deep fryer. Because the snacks are not simmering in burning fat or oil, the fat also does not soak into the food and you don't end up eating it. It's not called "healthy frying" for nothing.
The number of calories varies significantly depending on the cooking method. In the table below, you can see the different nutritional values per product per cooking method. Especially with fries, a big difference can be seen: deep-fried fries contain a whopping 320 calories per 100 grams, while air-fried fries contain only 130.
Snack | Calories deep-frying | Calories air frying |
Hamburger | 270 kcal | 200 kcal |
Friet (per 100 gram) | 320 kcal | 130 kcal |
And what about the products?
But usually, you don't prepare the same products in the oven or air fryer as you would throw into the deep fryer. Special products are developed for this, such as oven fries or air fryer meatballs. But are they not greased beforehand? Yes, that's right, but the difference is actually not that big.
As you can see, the number of calories is almost the same. And keep in mind: in this case, we're talking about prepared products. No additional calories are added during the preparation in the oven or air fryer, while a considerable amount of fat is added in the deep fryer.
Conclusion
The air fryer is the healthy alternative to the deep fryer. Prepared products contain much less fat and calories, and the products specially developed for the air fryer have only a small amount of extra fat added. The air fryer is also more versatile, safer, and produces less odor. Enough reason to get rid of your deep fryer and buy a new air fryer!
