Is consuming too much protein unhealthy?
Proteins are the building blocks for all cells in your body and essential for good health and a fit body. Protein-rich diets have therefore been popular for years. However, it is suggested that consuming too much protein can be harmful to your health.
But is this true? Is an excess of protein unhealthy and harmful to your body? In this article, we discuss the benefits and potential risks of consuming (too) much protein.
Is too much protein harmful or unhealthy?
Proteins are broken down by your liver into urea and excreted by your kidneys via your urine. If you eat more protein, your body will also produce more urea, which according to some theories can be burdensome for your liver and kidneys.
After many studies, however, there is currently no evidence that a high protein intake is harmful to healthy people who do not have kidney disease. (2) If you consume a lot of protein, it is important to drink enough water so that your body can eliminate the excess urea.
Disadvantages of too much protein
One disadvantage of a diet that is extremely high in protein is that people are so focused on their protein intake that they end up eating less carbohydrates and fats, and miss out on important nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants.
Therefore, it is best to follow the guidelines below so that you can still eat enough carbohydrates and fats:
- Eat between 1.0 and 1.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight daily.
- If you are a vegetarian or vegan, eat about 25% more protein.
Why do people eat too much protein?
Many athletes, especially strength athletes, believe that eating more protein leads to more muscle growth. However, this is not true.
Studies have shown that there is no evidence that a protein intake of more than 1.8 grams per kg of body weight is better for muscle building (and/or muscle retention during weight loss).
The body itself determines how much muscle mass can be built and will not build more protein if you eat more of it. A protein shake and a protein bar are handy to boost your daily protein intake, but don't overdo it :)
